CAR HIRE IN IRELAND
Hiring a car is a great way to explore all that Galway has to offer at your own comfort and on your own time. Most car rental companies are based in the main airports throughout Ireland, with some rental companies providing offices in Galway City. To further help, we’ve listed some things to note before hiring a car in Ireland;
Drivers Licence
You will need a valid drivers licence and a credit card to rent a vehicle in Ireland.
Age Limit
Most rental companies will not rent to drivers under 25 but there is no upper age limit. However, if you are over 75, you will be asked to meet additional requirements (this information is generally included in the terms and conditions on the company's website).
Driving in Ireland
In Ireland drivers drive on the left side of the road and the driver's side is on the right hand side of the car.
If it's your first time driving in Ireland, a smaller vehicle is often better to start with due to the narrow roads in Ireland. However be sure your vehicle isn't too small that you can't fit all your luggage in!
Vehicle Transmission
The majority of rental cars are standard / stick shift (manual transmission). Automatic cars are available but you should book well in advance of travelling to avoid disappointment.
Car Seat
If you are travelling with a child or children in need of a child seat, tell the rental company in advance.
Reduced Mobility
Modified and hand-controlled cars can be rented for those with reduced mobility.
Car Hire Deals
Where possible book in advance to get better offers or deals and to ensure availability during the high season.
Insurance
Most credit card companies exclude Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) rental car insurance coverage when renting a car in Ireland, so be sure to check this with your credit card company beforehand. Otherwise you will have the option to include this CDW insurance cover at the time of rental.
Getting Fuel
Petrol and diesel can be got at any service station throughout Ireland. In general, service stations tend to operate a 'self-fill up' and pay inside policy (so make sure you put the right fuel in!), but you may come across some service stations where there is an attendant who will fill up the car for your (you are not required to tip them). In addition, Ireland uses 'litres' instead of 'gallons' when it comes to fuel, and depending on where you are travelling from, you may find fuel to be quite more expensive than the norm.
