CLEGGAN COURT TOMB

The Cleggan Court Tomb is a megalithic monument that dates back to the Neolithic period, around 4000-2500 BC. It is located on the north banks of Cleggan Bay, near the village of Cleggan, and offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding landscape.

A court tomb is a type of megalithic tomb that consists of a burial chamber or gallery, usually divided into two or more segments, and an open courtyard or forecourt at the entrance. The courtyard was probably used for ceremonial purposes, such as rituals or offerings to the ancestors. The burial chamber was covered by a cairn of stones, sometimes with a facade of large upright stones. Court tombs are mainly found in the west and north of Ireland, and are among the oldest types of megalithic monuments in the country.

The Cleggan Court Tomb is one of the best-preserved examples of a court tomb in Galway. It has a small gallery, about 2.5 meters long and 2 meters wide, that is double-walled on one side and leads into a small ante-chamber and a main chamber. The main chamber is covered by a large and impressive roof-stone, measuring 3 meters long, 1.3 meters wide and 1 meter deep. The roof-stone is supported by two side-stones and two door jambs. The back-stone of the gallery is sunken below the surrounding soil, which suggests that the tomb was originally longer. The tomb is oriented west-northwest to east-southeast, which may indicate a connection to the solstices or other astronomical events.

The Cleggan Court Tomb is also remarkable for its location and setting. It is perched on the edge of a steep cliff, only 5 meters away from the sea, which gives it a dramatic and picturesque appearance. The tomb is surrounded by a low stone wall that may have been part of the original cairn or a later addition.

There is no admission fee so you can explore the tomb at your own pace and enjoy its beauty and history. The Cleggan Court Tomb is a hidden gem, a testament to the ancient culture and heritage of Ireland, and a wonderful place to experience nature and history in harmony.
