DERRYDONNELL MORE MILL

0.0

Derrydonnell More Mill is a windmill located near Moyvilla in Galway. It was built around 1750 and is one of the few windmills in the county. It is now in a ruinous and roofless state, but it still stands as a testament to the industrial heritage of the region.

The windmill was used to grind corn and wheat for local consumption and export. It had four sails and a conical cap that could be rotated to face the wind. It was also equipped with a kiln for drying the grain before milling. The windmill was part of a larger complex that included a miller’s house, a barn, a stable and a garden.

The windmill operated until the early 20th century, when it was abandoned and fell into decay. It suffered from vandalism and decay over the years. The windmill is a rare example of an industrial building from the 18th century in Galway. It is one of only a few surviving windmills in the county.

As the windmill is located on private property, it is not currently open to the public, but it can be viewed by the roadside or with the landowner’s permission.
