DÚN EOGHANACHTA

If you are looking for a unique and memorable experience on the Aran Islands, you should not miss Dún Eoghanachta, one of the most impressive stone forts on Inis Mór, the largest of the three Aran Islands. Dún Eoghanachta, which means “the fort of the Eoghanacht”, is named after a tribe from Munster who had connections with the island in medieval times. The fort is located in the western part of the island, south of the village of Sruthán, and offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding landscape.

Dún Eoghanachta is an ancient structure that dates back to the Iron Age, although the exact date of its construction is unknown. It consists of a circular single two-terraced wall that is 16 feet high and over 12 feet thick. The wall has stairs in several places and encloses an area of almost 90 feet in diameter. Inside the fort, you can see the remains of several clocháns, or beehive huts, that were used as dwellings by the inhabitants. Archaeological excavations in 1995 revealed evidence of hearths, animal and shell remains, and some iron objects inside the fort.

Dún Eoghanachta is a remarkable example of the engineering and craftsmanship of the ancient people who built it. The stones are carefully fitted together without any mortar or cement, and some of them weigh several tons. The fort is also strategically positioned on a hilltop that overlooks the sea and the land, making it an ideal place for defense and observation. The fort is surrounded by a ditch and a bank that add to its fortification.

Dún Eoghanachta is one of the lesser-known forts on the Aran Islands, compared to the more famous Dún Aonghasa, which is located on the edge of a cliff on Inis Mór. However, Dún Eoghanachta has its own charm and beauty, and it is well worth a visit if you want to explore the rich history and culture of the island. You can reach Dún Eoghanachta by bike, by foot, or by hiring a local guide who can tell you more about the fort and its stories.
