ROSS CASTLE
If you are looking for a unique and memorable experience in Ireland, you might want to consider staying at Ross Castle, a historic and elegant castle that offers both luxury and history. Ross Castle is located in Rosscahill, about a 25 minute drive from Galway City, and it is surrounded by a picturesque setting of mountains, lake, and parkland.
Ross Castle was built in 1590 by Robert Martin, one of the members of the “Tribes” of Galway, a group of 14 merchant families that dominated the political, commercial, and social life of Galway City from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Robert Martin was the first of the tribes to build a home outside the walls of the city, and his castle became known as “The ancient home of the Martins of Ross”.
The castle was constructed on the foundation of an earlier fortress built by the O’Flahertys, one of the most distinguished tribes of Galway, who were known for their ferocity and resistance to English rule. The castle was a symbol of the wealth and power of the Martins, who were involved in various businesses such as woolen manufacturing, shipping, banking, and landowning. The Martins also played an important role in the political and cultural life of Galway, serving as mayors, members of parliament, patrons of arts and education, and supporters of Catholicism.
However, the fortunes of the Martins declined in the 18th and 19th centuries due to various factors such as wars, famines, debts, and emigration. In 1770, a fire destroyed much of the interior and roof of the castle, and it was later sold to the Martin family of Ballynahinch Castle. The castle fell into ruin and neglect until it was purchased by the McLaughlin family in 1985, who spent 15 years restoring it to its former glory.
Today, Ross Castle is a stunning and elegant accommodation that offers refined elegance for your special occasion or memorable holiday. The castle has several bedrooms along with other grand rooms such as a drawing room, a dining room, a library, and a billiards room that are perfect for relaxing or entertaining.
The castle also has four self-catering cottages that can accommodate more guests, each with its own kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedrooms. The cottages are ideal for families or groups who want more privacy and flexibility.
The castle is situated on a 120-acre estate that has many amenities for guests to enjoy. There is an indoor heated swimming pool that is open all year round, a tennis court, a lake with a row boat and fishing gear, gardens with flowers and herbs, and a trailed public forest at the estate’s periphery.
Ross Castle is more than just a place to stay; it is an experience that will immerse you in the history, culture, and beauty of Ireland. Whether you are looking for a romantic getaway, a family vacation, a corporate retreat, or a fairy-tale wedding venue, Ross Castle can cater to your needs and preferences. You can enjoy the comfort and luxury of the castle’s rooms and cottages, the charm and elegance of the castle’s grand rooms, the fun and adventure of the estate’s amenities, and the hospitality and service of the castle’s staff.
