Killure Castle is a two-storey tower house that dates back to the 15th or 16th century. It is located near the village of Ahascragh, about 15 km from Ballinasloe.

Killure Castle was once the property of the O’Kelly clan, who ruled over the region of Ui Maine. The castle was probably built as a defensive stronghold and a residence for the local lord. It has an east-facing entrance, traces of vaulting and a passage in the south wall that probably led to a latrine. The castle also has a fine front wall with cut stone pillars and ornate double gates.

Unfortunately, there is little known about the history of Killure Castle and its inhabitants. The castle was abandoned at some point and fell into ruin. It is now privately owned and not open to the public. However, you can still admire it from the road or with the landowner’s permission.

Killure Castle is one of the many castles in Galway that reflect the rich and turbulent past of its area.
